Paint by Number Supplies
You will only need a few supplies to get started with your paint by number art!
Included in your paint by number PDF you will find a color key using DecoArt Acrylic Paint. You can find DecoArt paint in the wood craft section at Walmart, Hobby Lobby, Joann’s, any craft store or Amazon.
TIP: If you can’t find the exact color listed on the color key, then just match the colors from another brand. When I grabbed my paints from Joann’s they were out of several colors. Paint by number is really popular! You also have the option to mix colors for example, I couldn’t find Black Forest Green in the Succulent painting color key. So I chose Forest Green and added black to darken it and it turned out great!
Supplies:
- Small paint brush
- Paint (based on color key of the print you choose)
- Paper to print on (Canvas Print Paper)
- Cup of Water/Paper Towel
- Paper plate to pour paint on or Plastic Paint Pots
- Painter’s tape
- Cardboard (larger than print)
How to Print Paint by Number Pages
Each paint by number page has a *link in purple* below the lined paint image. Click that link and download to your computer. Then print from your computer or send to a local print shop. I like to use FedEx print.
You can print on a heavier paper (80 lbs) or use a textured paper.
I chose this printable canvas paper that I got from Amazon. The canvas paper makes your painting more realistic, and I personally love the way it looks in a frame without the glass.
You will notice a border around the print. This is to give you space to tape down your paper to cardboard/wood backing. Now your project won’t move around while you are painting.
TIP: If you use the canvas paper make sure that your computer will print thicker paper!
Easy Paint by Number Printable Directions
- Print Paint by Number Page
- Use painter’s tape to secure the Paint by Number print to cardboard/wood
- Use the color key to number your paints
- Pour paint onto a paper plate
- Follow the Color Key and start painting!
- Rinse paint brush and dry thoroughly when changing paint colors.
More Tips to Make a Simiple Paint by Number
- When printing on canvas paper, print out an extra copy to track what you have already done.
- Areas that use a light color may need an extra coat of paint to cover the number. Wait until the first coat is dry and then paint the area again.
- There are 2 ways to tackle the painting. You can paint in sections or you can paint by number. I prefer to paint in sections so I can see the process coming together. However, it’s a little more orderly if you paint by number. Decide what is best for you!
- Paint the background as the final step. This will help clean up the outlines in your painting.
- If you decide to mix colors together, make sure you mix enough. It can be hard to match the color again if you need to mix more later.
- Cover your left over paint (on paper plate) with clear plastic wrap and place in the refrigerator when you need to stop and pick up again later.
- Enjoy the process! This is meant to be a fun and relaxing art activity. Don’t stress about perfection. Take your time. The succulent paint by number took me about 3 hours to finish. I had to stop and start several times. There’s no need to rush.
