I’m always looking for ways to make cheap farmhouse decor. So I created these 10 rustic printables for Christmas and picked up Dollar Store supplies and they turned into these cute wood signs! The materials are light weight and you can easily hang them with mounting putty or set them around the house on a bookcase, table top, or counter.

These DIY farmhouse signs also make great little gifts for neighbors or teachers!

Step by Step Instructions for DIY Wood Farmhouse Signs

First remove the canvas from the Dollar Tree art frames. It comes off fairly easy, but you may need to use scissors to cut the canvas from the staples. I first tried to pry the staples loose, but it was really hard to do and almost broke the wood frame. So instead I just pulled the canvas off. The staples will be covered later with the picture and rustic card stock.

Next use the wood frame to trace a rectangle onto the rustic card stock. I used my favorite textured cardboard card stock that I picked up from Hobby Lobby. This will be used later to cover the back of the sign.

Now it’s time to add the stain. I used a stain that I found in my garage that was used for other house projects. We bought our stain from Lowe’s.

Make sure you put down a protective layer like old cardboard so that the stain doesn’t seep through.

Add the stain using an old cloth or a sponge applicator. Simply rub the stain onto the wood and spread it out until it has an even coating. Then set aside and let dry.

While the frames are drying print and cut the rustic Christmas signs you want to use. I recommend printing on sturdy card stock paper.

Use your hot glue gun to attach the Christmas sign printable to the back of the wood frame. Then attach the rustic card stock to the back of the printable. The rustic card stock gives it a nice finished look!
