DIY Shamrock Felt Garland Tutorial

This step by step felt shamrock tutorial is designed so that adults or kids can make these cute little shamrocks!

We made our shamrocks out of 2 different colors of green felt. You can follow this tutorial and make your own shamrocks any colors you want to use! I purchased my felt from Joann’s Fabric. They have a wall full of different colors! I choose felt that was soft instead of the sturdier felt sheets.

For the shamrock template, I chose to use a medium sized Shamrock template for cutting out our Shamrocks. You can find many different sizes of shamrocks to use in this post Shamrock Template Free Printables.

MATERIALS

  • Felt (I used 4 sheets of the 9x12in)
  • Shamrock Template Free Printable (choose your size)
  • Marker
  • Scissors
  • Needle
  • Embroidery Thread
  • Twine
  • Stuffing (you could also use tissue paper)

DIRECTIONS

  • Print the shamrock template on cardstock paper and cut out the template.
  • Trace the template onto the felt using the marker.
  • Cut out the felt shamrock. I placed another sheet underneath so that I could cut 2 at a time. (Repeat steps 2 and 3 until you have all the shamrocks you want to make.)
  • Place 2 shamrocks together with the tracing turned to the inside.
  • Thread your needle and use a basic running stitch to sew the two pieces together. Leave a small gap to insert the stuffing.
  • Insert the stuffing with your fingers. You may also need to use a wood skewer to push the stuffing around inside the shamrock.
  • Now close the hole with the basic running stitch and then tying a knot at the end of the stitch. The front will look like a line of dashes and is so cute for these little shamrocks!
  • Now use the hot glue gun to attach the shamrocks to the twine. Space out the shamrocks evenly and glue the twine to the back of the shamrock.
  • Hang your felt shamrock garland using tape or the 3m plastic removable tabs. I actually use flat stocking holders to hang my garland on the mantle!

Basic Running Stitch

The running stitch is a simple hand sewing stitch that can be used for a variety of purposes, such as basting fabric together, hemming, or creating decorative effects. Here are the basic steps to do a running stitch:

  1. Thread your needle: Cut a length of thread and thread it through the eye of the needle. Tie a knot at the end of the thread.
  2. Prepare your fabric: Place your fabric on a flat surface and decide where you want to sew your running stitch. If you are joining two pieces of fabric together, place them with the right sides facing each other.
  3. Insert your needle: Starting from the back of the fabric, push your needle up through the fabric to the front at the starting point of your stitching line.
  4. Stitch along the line: Push the needle down through the fabric, about 1/4 inch away from the starting point. Pull the thread through until the knot catches on the fabric.
  5. Repeat: Continue to stitch along the line, pushing the needle up through the fabric and down again, keeping your stitches even and the same length. Try to keep the stitches uniform in size and spacing.
  6. Tie off: When you reach the end of your stitching line, tie a knot in the thread and trim off any excess.

Remember to keep the tension on the thread consistent to keep the stitches even. With a bit of practice, you’ll be able to master the running stitch and use it in a variety of sewing projects.
