How to Make Stained Glass Easter Egg Suncatchers

Make stained glass suncatchers with these simple craft supplies: black glue, clear plastic, Sharpie markers, and scissors! This craft is really easy to make. The most difficult part is being patient while the glue dries.

SUPPLIES

  • Free Printable Easter Egg Templates
  • Black Glue (also known as Goth Glue)
  • Clear Plastic (use wax paper, clear plastic from a container, sheet protector, or plastic folder)
  • Sharpie Markers

What is Black Glue?

Black glue is Elmer’s glue mixed with black acrylic paint. It is essentially a colored glue that dries slightly raised. This makes it great for watercolor painting crafts and stain glass crafts. The black glue is thicker than acrylic paint, so it holds its form easily.

Black glue also goes by the name of Goth Glue which has become popular on TikTok.

How to Make Black Glue

Make black glue by mixing 1 part Elmer’s glue with 1 part acrylic paint.

Start with a new bottle of Elmer’s glue or use one that is already half empty. If using a new bottle you will need to pour out half of the Elmer’s glue into an airtight container. You can save that glue for use at a later time to make more Black glue or use the glue for other projects.

Then pour the black acrylic paint directly into the Elmer’s glue bottle. It should be about half the amount of glue.

Mix the glue and paint with a long stick like a wooden skewer, or you can close the lid and mix it by shaking the bottle.

Try the Black Glue out on a scrap piece of paper to make sure the black glue is mixed well and no white is showing through.

Make an Easter Egg Suncatcher with Goth Glue

Now that you have all your supplies, it’s time to get crafty!

Choose one of the 5 free printable egg designs to use as the template for your stained glass Easter egg suncatcher. Print out the egg design template onto cardstock paper.

Place the egg design under the clear plastic. Use clear tape to attach the design to the clear plastic so that it doesn’t move around as you work.

Now that you have your Easter egg template set up, it’s time to use the Goth Glue (black glue). Trace the egg template design on top of the clear plastic using the Goth Glue.

TIP: Squeeze the goth glue bottle for a thicker line, and lightly squeeze (or less pressure) for a thinner line. There is no way to mess up the lines. Some lines may be thicker and others will be thinner. Each person’s Easter egg will be unique!

Let the Goth Glue dry. It may take a couple of hours for it to dry. You could speed up the process by using a hair dryer to dry the goth glue.

Once the black glue dries, it will be time to use the Sharpie markers to color the Easter Eggs. Sharpie markers are great for this project because they are inexpensive compared to stain glass paint and they come in a variety of colors!

I recommend letting the Sharpie marker dry for a few minutes so that it doesn’t smear.

When you finish coloring your Easter eggs, it is time to cut out the Easter egg. Leave a small edge around the Easter egg suncatcher. The clear plastic is translucent and will not be seen once it is hung in the window.

The final step is to tape the stained glass Easter Egg suncatcher to a window or sliding glass door. Place three small strips of double sided tape onto the Easter Egg suncatcher. Then place the Easter Egg suncachter to the window.

Make as many Easter egg suncatchers as you want to fill your windows this Easter!
