This cute DIY felt Christmas tree banner is easy to put together. Make this cute 3D felt tree garland to add to your DIY Christmas decor!

Christmas tree crafts are one of my favorite holiday craft DIYs. I made these pretty Dollar Tree Christmas trees out of card stock and foam board. And now I’m turning small felt Christmas trees into a Christmas tree garland to hang on the mantle.

Felt Christmas trees are really popular this year as table top Christmas decorations. I think I’ve seen felt Christmas trees in every store I’ve walked into! I love that the felt creates a soft texture for the Christmas trees and makes my home feel warm during the holiday season.

These Christmas trees are easy to make and the most difficult part is cutting them out if you have to cut by hand. If you have a Cricut or Silhoutte cutting machine you could use that to easily cut out the Christmas tree shapes. I don’t have a cutting machine so I cut my Christmas trees out by hand.

How to Make 3D Felt Christmas Trees

For this 3D felt Christmas tree tutorial you will need a Christmas tree template. You can get my free printable Christmas tree templates in sizes 3 inches, 5 inches, and 7 inches. I decided to make small felt Christmas trees in the 3 inch sizes for the felt Christmas tree banner.

I recommend printing the Christmas tree template onto card stock for easier use when cutting around the trees.

Here’s how to make a 3D felt Christmas tree banner and I’ve included step by step pictures to help you along the way!

SUPPLIES:

  • Felt (your choice of colors) for 3 inch Christmas Trees you will need 3 sheets of 9×12 inch felt, 5 inch Christmas trees you will need 6 sheets of 9×12 inch felt, 15 sheets of 9×12 inch felt
  • Christmas tree template printable
  • Twine, jute cord, or something similar in 6 feet length for the banner and an additional 18 inches to be used for the hooks to hang the Christmas trees.
  • Hot glue gun
  • Decorative wood beads (optional)
  • Scissors
  • Straight pins

DIRECTIONS:

1. Cut out the Christmas tree template in the size you want to make your Christmas trees. I made my Christmas trees for this garland 3 inches tall. You can get a variety of different Christmas tree sizes using these Christmas Tree Templates.

2. Attach the Christmas tree template to the felt using straight pins. Then cut around the Christmas tree template. You will need very sharp scissors for the best results!

Each small 3D felt Christmas tree will need 5 felt Christmas trees. I made my Christmas tree garland a standard 6 feet long with one Christmas tree for every foot. You will need a total of 30 felt Christmas trees to make the same Christmas tree garland. Of course you can always add more trees or make your garland smaller!

PRO TIP: Use very sharp fabric scissors for the best cut of felt. The edges will be cleaner when you use sharp scissors.

3. Cut your jute cord into 6 – 3 inch strips and tie the end of strip into a knot. This will be used to create the hook that your 3D Christmas tree will hang on the banner.

4. Now it’s time to put your 3D felt Christmas tree together. We will be gluing the center of the Christmas tree together to create the 3D Christmas tree.

Run a line of hot glue down the center of the Christmas tree. Line up the edges of the first Christmas tree and the second Christmas tree, then place on top of the hot glue.

5. You will need a loop ready to attach to the center of the tree. Fold the two Christmas trees together so that the glue spine is showing. Add a dab of hot glue at the top of the tree and glue the knot end of the loop there.

6. Align the outer edges of the second Christmas tree with the third Christmas tree. Starting at the knot at the top, run a line of hot glue down the spine of the two Christmas trees that are already glued together. Then press the third Christmas tree on top of the glue securing it in place.

7. Align the outer edges of the third Christmas tree with the fourth Christmas tree. Starting at the top, run a line of hot glue down the spine of the three Christmas trees that are already glued together. Then press the fourth Christmas tree on top of the glue securing it in place.

8. Align the outer edges of the fourth Christmas tree with the fifth Christmas tree. Starting at the top, run a line of hot glue down the spine of the three Christmas trees that are already glued together. Then press the fifth Christmas tree on top of the glue securing it in place.

9. Complete steps 4-8 for each Christmas tree that you make for your banner.

10. Optional: Add a decorative wood bead to the top of each Christmas tree. Insert the top of the through the wooden bead.

11. Slide the small Christmas trees on the 6 feet of jute cord. Then hang the 3D felt Christmas banner. I decided to hang my Christmas Tree banner on our fire place.

I love a cute Christmas banner and I think this simple felt Christmas garland looks great layered with a Merry Christmas Banner. Where do you plan to hang your 3D Christmas Tree banner?
