TIP: If you’re like me and don’t have any grain sack cloth fabric, then you may want to use the tutorial linked above to make your own. I purchased a 1/4 of a yard because I wanted to make 5 ornaments. The amount of fabric you need will be determined by the number of ornaments you want to make and the size of those ornaments.

Directions:

For the purpose of this tutorial, I will be using the 7 inch pointed star pattern. You can follow the same directions below regardless of the ornament pattern you choose to make.

1. Print and cut out the star pattern onto cardstock paper. This will make it easy to cut around on the fabric. Grab a variety of sizes with this star template.

2. Fold the fabric so that you will be cutting 2 pieces out at the same time. Attach the star pattern securely to the fabric using pins.

I prefer not to trace the pattern onto the fabric because I can easily attach the pattern with pins. This leaves a clean fabric without any tracing lines left over. You may prefer to trace the pattern with a pencil.

3. Cut around the pattern.

PRO TIP: Use really sharp scissors to cut your fabric. This will give you the cleanest cut! Sharp scissors make all the difference.

4. Cut off a small length of twine or jute cord to use as the ornament hanger. In the next step you will hot glue the cord into place.

5. Now that you have two pieces, use the hot glue gun to glue the fabric together along the edge. Leave a hole open at the bottom of the ornament so that you can add the filler.

6. Use the opening at the bottom to add the filler (either tissue paper or fiber fill).

7. Trim the star with fabric shears. I love the jagged edges that shears give fabric for the extra shabby chic look.
